A larger German Shepherd had come through a neighbor’s front entrance, followed the walking pair into the street and, according to Abby’s testimony, bitten Sadie in the stomach. By the time the dog was called back inside, the people who had seen different parts of the encounter were telling different stories—and one key witness was not in court.

The resulting dispute, Crider v. Saa, was decided not by a recording of the bite but by a sequence of questions about doors, timing and responsibility. A second case later in the hearing, Waterman v. Crowell, raised a different concern: what happens when a returned dog is described as dangerous and the seller’s account of its rescue and adoption history begins to unravel?

Case One : The walk on November 24, 2023

The first case concerned a neighborhood encounter on November 24, 2023, at approximately 4:00 or 4:30 p.m. Lisa and Abby Crider lived close to Julie Saa; the distance was described in court as roughly half a mile. Abby was walking two dogs beside Saa’s house. Both were on leashes: Sadie, an approximately nine-year-old Australian Cattle Dog weighing about 35 to 40 pounds, and Willow, a schnauzer who was not injured.

Saa had a six-year-old female German Shepherd. Its weight was discussed during the hearing as approximately 60 to 80 pounds. The difference in size shaped the testimony, but the legal question was narrower: whether Saa should be responsible for the veterinary expenses after Sadie was bitten.

The transcript does not describe a fatal or life-threatening injury. It describes a bite to Sadie’s stomach or underbelly and a claim for the resulting veterinary bill. Abby’s account supplied the clearest timeline from the sidewalk to the aftermath.

What Abby Crider said happened

Abby testified that the German Shepherd bolted through the front door while she was walking past the house. She tried to move into the road to create distance because she did not know whether the dog was aggressive. The German Shepherd followed.

She said she attempted to block the animal without hitting it, partly because she was afraid of being bitten herself. The dogs were in the road when the German Shepherd came close to Sadie. Abby did not describe every movement in the encounter; she said she was trying to move away and heard Sadie yelp. When she looked, Sadie had been bitten in the stomach area.

A man then came out of the house and called the German Shepherd back. Abby identified him as Saa’s ex-husband, who was visiting. Saa was inside. Her 12-year-old son had arrived only a few minutes earlier, creating an additional question about who had entered the home and how the door had opened.

Abby said she began walking back toward her own house, called her mother and then called police. Police told her to go home. She recalled hearing the man yell something from farther down the block, but she could not remember his words. She testified that she never saw Saa during the incident.

Her later comments showed that the dispute had changed her routine. Abby said she was crying after Sadie was bitten and described the encounter as frightening. She also said she had not walked past the house again except once while taking her dogs out. At the same time, Saa characterized the event as a “nonevent” and said police had not issued her a ticket.

The door and the missing witness

Saa’s testimony began with the entrance to her home. She described a steel security door and a heavy glass door. On the afternoon in question, the security door was open while the glass door was in place. She said the glass door normally latched heavily.

Then came the admission that changed the shape of the case: Saa acknowledged that her German Shepherd was trained to open a door with its paw. She maintained that she had never previously seen the dog open the door and run outside. Her position was not that the dog lacked the ability, but that she had not seen it escape on this occasion and did not personally see a confrontation in the street.

Saa said she was lying down in a bedroom near the front room while her ex-husband was in the hallway. She heard a door latch and initially assumed her son had come in to see his father. When there was no greeting, she asked where the dog was. She said she and her ex-husband went to the front door together.

From the entrance, Saa said she saw both dogs in her front yard, barking. Her dog gave a warning bark and returned inside when called. She also said her ex-husband called out to the woman walking away with her dog and received no response.

That account left a gap between the alleged bite and Saa’s arrival at the door. Judge Judy Sheindlin repeatedly returned to that gap. Saa had not seen the dogs in the road, but the court had heard Abby’s testimony that the bite occurred there. The ex-husband, who was described as the person who went outside and called the German Shepherd back, was not present as a witness.

Why the court awarded $775

The court’s reasoning did not depend on Saa personally seeing the bite. Judge Sheindlin stated that the fact a person did not see an event does not mean the event did not happen. She pointed to the time required for Saa to remain in bed, speak with her ex-husband, get up and reach the front of the house. During that interval, the judge said, the dogs could have moved from the road back toward the property before Saa saw them.

The decisive issue was prior knowledge. Saa knew the dog could open the door. Once that ability was known, the judge concluded that leaving the entry unsecured created a responsibility to take further precautions, such as keeping both doors closed. The court entered judgment for Lisa and Abby Crider in the amount of $775, the veterinary expense at issue.

The result did not establish that every detail of Abby’s account had been independently witnessed. It established that, on the testimony presented, the court found Saa responsible for failing to prevent a known escape risk and awarded the claimed amount.

The case also carried a human consequence beyond the judgment. Abby said she had expected her neighbor to do the right thing and pay the bill. Saa disagreed with the seriousness of the event. Between those positions stood a dog injury, an absent witness and a courtroom decision built from timing and competing accounts.

Case Two : The separate dispute over a rescue dog

The episode then moved to Waterman v. Crowell, a separate civil dispute involving Lawrence Waterman and dog-rescue owner Rose Crowell. Waterman sought the return of $525 after purchasing a young dog he said was dangerous.

Waterman testified that he found the dog through a Facebook Marketplace advertisement for corgis, a breed his daughter wanted. He said Crowell represented the dog as approximately six months old, although it appeared closer to a year. After he contacted Crowell about behavioral problems, he eventually returned the dog.

Crowell confirmed the $525 payment and said she received the dog back 17 days later, in June. She testified that the dog came from a litter rescued from Rosarito, Mexico. Another person transported the puppies into San Diego, where Crowell collected them. There were eight puppies. One stayed with Crowell, and the other seven were adopted for $525 each.

The language became contested. Crowell referred to the transactions as adoptions, while the court focused on the money received. She said she had paid for shots, food, housing, deworming and other care. She also said the returned dog was eventually spayed after it came back to her.

Judge Sheindlin questioned why seven puppies would have been sterilized while Waterman’s dog had not. Crowell offered an explanation involving veterinary availability and the difference between male and female procedures, but the judge stated that she did not believe parts of her testimony. Because Crowell retained the dog, the court ordered her to return Waterman’s $525.

The two cases involved different facts, but the same broader concern: people who control animals are also responsible for the conditions under which those animals are kept, transferred or returned. In the second, it concerned the terms and credibility surrounding a dog transaction.

FAQ

What happened in Crider v.
