The dispute appeared to be about unpaid installments, but in court, the larger question became whether the testimony about the loan, the relationship, and the rental property could be trusted.

A loan made during a financial crisis

The hearing opened with a straightforward explanation of the dispute. Mister Boykin told the court that he had been involved in a short relationship with the defendant, Myesha Simms. During that period, Sims was described as being short on money and living out of her car. She needed money for rent and a security deposit, but did not have enough to cover the amount required.

According to the complaint, Boykin took out a loan for her through a loan company. The amount was stated in court as $2,600. The agreement, as Boykin described it, was that Sims would repay the money in installments. He said the debt had not been paid as expected and that the balance had increased to $3,543 because interest continued to accumulate.

Sims presented a different version of the agreement. She said she was supposed to pay half of the loan. She also said that Boykin had taken $200 when the loan was granted because, in her account, that payment was for arranging the loan on her behalf.

The first issue was therefore not simply whether money had changed hands. It was what each person had agreed to repay and under what terms.

The numbers begin to unravel

Judge Judy immediately began testing the financial circumstances behind the loan. Boykin said he was working at the time. He described doing construction and plumbing work and also said he worked for a marketing company. He testified that he was paid by the hour, worked approximately 40 hours per week, and had been with Advantage Sales and Marketing for five years.

That information raised a basic question: if Boykin had stable employment, why had he been unable to obtain a loan in his own name? He answered that he did not have the necessary credit.

Sims was questioned about her own financial situation. She said she had gone through a divorce, fallen into a financial crisis, and had about $2,000 saved. She said she needed approximately $4,800 in connection with a home she was attempting to buy, or at least obtain through an option to buy. Part of the amount was described as a deposit.

The discussion then shifted to the property. Sims said she was still living there in Los Angeles. She did not own it. She paid rent to a landlord named Bob, and she referred to a monthly amount that was transcribed in the hearing as $1,400. The court also examined a separate security deposit.

Judge Judy challenged the logic of borrowing through a very expensive loan for a housing arrangement that appeared to require a substantial amount of money up front. She then requested the actual loan papers rather than a photocopy and asked to see Sims’s lease.

The lease that changed the questioning

The court broke for Sims to obtain a copy of the lease from her landlord. When the hearing resumed, Sims produced the document.

The lease identified Dixon as a co-tenant. Sims first described Dixon as her boyfriend, then said he was not her boyfriend and called him a friend. That distinction became important because the lease was signed on January 28 with Dixon, while Sims’s written answer referred to a different relationship timeline.

Boykin testified that he had met Dixon when he went to confront Sims about the money. He said the visit took place one morning at approximately 7:00 a.m. He saw Dixon leaving the property with a child, whom he understood to be Dixon’s child. Boykin said Dixon stopped when he saw him, and that Boykin then knocked on the door.

At the door, Boykin said he asked Sims where his money was. He also said he explained that the balance was increasing every day because of the interest. In his account, the loan would have been far less expensive if the payments had been made on time. He estimated that the lender’s interest would have been approximately $100 to $107 under the arrangement he and Sims had discussed.

The lease became a central piece of the hearing because it allowed the court to compare the claimed housing costs with the financial story given earlier.

A relationship defined under oath

Judge Judy then examined the timeline of Sims’s relationship with Boykin. Sims said that a few months after the loan, in March, she learned that Shawn Boykin was a convicted felon. She testified that she told him they could no longer see each other and then rekindled a relationship with her former boyfriend.

The lease, however, had been signed in January with Dixon, who was now described as Sims’s current boyfriend. Judge Judy pointed out that the dates did not fit comfortably with Sims’s written account. She concluded that the answer Sims had filed was incorrect and that the related story in her signed deposition was also incorrect.

Boykin’s own description of the relationship was also tested. When asked how long he had dated Sims, he resisted that characterization. He explained that he had known her through Antoinette, a woman he had been dating. According to Boykin, Antoinette was distraught because she could no longer speak with him, gave his phone number to Myesha Simms, and Sims initially contacted him as a friend.

Boykin said Sims told him that her family would not help her and asked whether he could assist her. Under questioning, he acknowledged that he had been intimate with Sims, despite trying to distinguish that from being in an “intimate relationship.” Judge Judy noted the distinction and pressed him to answer the question directly.

The exchange did not resolve the financial dispute, but it showed why the court was examining the personal history behind the loan. The credibility of both sides had become part of the case.

The evidence behind the payments

Sims said she had paid $1,500 toward the loan. Judge Judy asked her to show proof. Sims produced a receipt, but the document appeared to show a total payment of $500 rather than the amount she claimed. Sims then referred to another receipt and said she had paid a total of $1,500 using a card.

Because the loan was in Boykin’s name, the lender would not provide Sims with the complete account information. Sims said she had been making payments directly and had paid in cash. Judge Judy questioned why cash payments to a loan company would not produce receipts, money orders, or another record.

The exchange left the court without the documentation needed to confirm Sims’s claimed payments. The receipt she presented did not establish the full amount she said she had paid, and no checks, money orders, or additional receipts were produced in the testimony shown in the SRT.

The interest rate at the center of the dispute

The loan document presented an unusually high cost. Judge Judy read that a $2,600 loan, if repaid through the stated minimum payments, would result in a total repayment of $12,533. The interest rate was identified as 135.393 percent.

Judge Judy questioned whether the arrangement could implicate usury laws in the state. Boykin agreed that it was a ridiculous thing to do, but maintained that he and Sims had reached their own understanding about repayment. Under that understanding, he said, the lender would have received only about $107 in interest if the agreed amount had been paid.

The dispute therefore involved two separate financial realities. The lender’s written terms created a balance that could grow dramatically. The private agreement between Boykin and Sims was described as a way to limit the cost if Sims paid what she had promised. The court had to consider the evidence of that private agreement, the payment history, and the conflicting accounts about the housing expenses.

Why the case was dismissed

Near the end of the hearing, the court established that the matter had gone to collections and that Boykin had paid the $140 collection payments. Judge Judy told him that continuing those payments was what he should do.

The final ruling was brief: the case was dismissed. Judge Judy ended the hearing without ordering Sims to pay the disputed $3,543 balance.

The transcript does not provide a separate written explanation for every legal reason behind the dismissal. What it does show is a case weakened by inconsistent testimony, incomplete payment records, disputed relationship timelines, and a loan whose stated interest rate was extraordinarily high.

The hearing began as a claim over unpaid installments. It ended as a credibility dispute in which the documents were more important than the original accusation. The lease, the loan terms, and the receipts all forced the testimony to be measured against something outside the parties’ memories. In the end, the court dismissed the case.

FAQ

Who sued Myesha Simms on Judge Judy?

Mister Boykin brought the claim against Myesha Simms. He said he had taken out a $2,600 loan for her and that the balance had increased to $3,543 because of accumulating interest.

How much did the loan originally cost?

The hearing described the loan amount as $2,600. The transcript also stated that repayment through the minimum payments would total $12,533 at an interest rate of 135.393 percent.

What evidence did the court examine?

The court examined the loan papers, Sims’s lease, the claimed payment receipts, and the parties’ testimony about their relationship and repayment agreement.

Did Myesha Simms say she made payments?

Yes. Sims said she had paid $1,500. During questioning, the receipt initially shown appeared to document $500, and she referred to another receipt for the remainder. She also said she had paid cash.

What happened to the case?

The case was dismissed. Judge Judy told Boykin to continue making the $140 payments associated with the collection matter.

Was this a criminal case?

No. The SRT presents the matter as a civil courtroom dispute involving a loan, repayment, lease evidence, and competing testimony. It does not establish a criminal prosecution.

A debt that began as a $2,600 loan had grown to $3,543.
